Key Activities

Reporting to the NAC’s Technical Directors and responsible to the Production Director the Head Sound Engineer, Babs Asper Theatre will be responsible and accountable for the set-up, preparation, operation, and maintenance of sound equipment related to activities held in the Babs Asper Theatre. The Head Sound Engineer will be responsible for co-ordinating the work of the Sound Department, which includes the allocation of duties and supervising of crews. Provide equipment installation and expertise to visiting touring and co-producing companies. Assist with audio system and content design when touring shows are not accompanied by a Designer or Technician. Attend production meetings with TDs to assist in the planning and organization of upcoming shows. You will be willing to commit to the long-term development of your own technical, leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills. Your team skills are of critical importance in your dealings with workers, heads of departments, production staff, artists and clients.

Skill Requirements

-A member in good standing of IATSE, Local 471
-A strong working knowledge of both official languages
-Must possess valid certificates for: Working at Heights, Forklift, and Elevated Work Platforms.
-Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship with artists, clients and colleagues
-Ability to maintain a positive working environment and a positive attitude is essential
-Good organizational skills and initiative
-Demonstrated ability to coordinate and execute multiple projects within scheduling and financial constraints
-Experience in the direction and supervision of crews
-Ability to work with artists and clients of varying experience levels
-Thorough knowledge of the coordination, setup and running of touring productions.
-Thorough knowledge of theatrical performance audio, as well as live vocal and instrumental engineering.
-Demonstrated ability to set up, trouble shoot and operate a variety of complex digital audio systems
-Knowledgeable in the current practices and techniques in a variety of performing arts disciplines
-An ability to read and interpret plans
-A good knowledge of safe working practices in a performing arts environment
-Ability to complete and maintain any required certifications
-A high level of experience with automated and digital audio devices, including but not limited to automated audio control systems, playback devices, digital communication systems.
-The ability to program and operate high-end digital consoles.
-Completion of a recognized audio or recording courses are an asset

A past record of satisfactory attendance and punctuality is a requirement.
