Key Activities

Under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor, the General Maintenance Worker – Lead Hand ensures that the operational needs related to janitorial activities at the National Arts Centre (NAC) are met. The successful candidate is responsible for establishing daily priorities, organizing and distributing work orders to cleaners, ensuring the completion of the tasks and quality control. The incumbent is also required to perform a variety of housekeeping work to ensure the cleanliness and hygiene of the NAC, and to promptly respond to any urgent cleaning request in a curtious and effective manner. The incumbent may be required to provide information and services to customers of the NAC, as required by the public and liaise with the full time Lead Hand.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Washroom Cleaning
• Recycle and Garbage Disposal
• Using walk behind and ride-on machinery, scrubbers and sweepers
• Dusting and Mopping
• Litter Pick Up and Removal
• Performing other related activities as required.

Skill Requirements

- Completed a high school diploma;
- Minimum of three to five (3 to 5) years of experience in a supervisory role, preferably in an unionized environment;
- Minimum of two (2) years of related janitorial experience using industrial vacuums, floor scrubbers and operating carpet cleaners;
- Must be able to lift up to 30lbs on a regular basis;
- Must be able to push/pull carts weighing up to 200lbs;
- Ability to follow directions and work with limited supervision;
- Must be friendly, upbeat, and work well with other employees and be able to interact with guests;
- Ability to work under pressure and to react quickly in emergency situations;
- Must be able to stand & exert well paced mobility for up to 8 hours;
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning tasks;
- Shifts are on weekends and occasionally evenings and days during the week;
- WHMIS training a definite asset and will be required upon hire;
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Fluently bilingual in both official languages (English and French);
- A past record of satisfactory attendance and punctuality is a requirement.
