Reporting to the Manager, Production Services, the Head Fly Operator, in collaboration with the Head Carpenter and the Technical Director, is responsible for the safe suspension and operation of scenic elements related to performances in Southam Hall. The Head Fly Operator is responsible for the coordination of the work of the fly department including the set up, preparation, handling, operation and maintenance of the manual fly system and motorized rigging equipment. Managing and supervising workers assigned to the area and ensuring the work is completed while maintaining the highest degree of safety and respect is of critical importance. Key Responsibilities:
• Must be a member in good standing of IATSE, Local 471;• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience;• Completion of a recognized rigging certification program such as ETCP is an asset;• Ability to maintain a positive working environment with artists, clients and colleagues is essential;• Responsible for the direction and supervision of crew;• Effective and concise communication skills;• The ability to read and interpret plans;• A strong knowledge of safe working practices in a theatrical environment;• Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of a double purchase counterweight fly system;• Experience with theatrical rigging techniques, including motorized systems;• Capability of performing tasks repeatedly with a high degree of consistency and independence;• Requires physical stamina and strength. Must be capable of moving from the deck to the fly floor to the grid etc. with ease as well as being capable of lifting, pulling and carrying heavy loads on a regular and on-going basis;• Understanding of physics and mathematics sufficient to determine load capacities is required;• Proficiency in both official languages is an asset;• Possess and maintain certifications in working at heights, elevated work platform, forklift and First Aid/CPR;• Basic computer skills and understanding of Microsoft 365 products;• Perform other related duties as required;• Oral French would be an asset.
